Technology is moving fast. If you take a class in the field, by the time you finish the course, the technology is outdated.  Technology is replacing many jobs while creating others. Today, people can learn just about anything by simply Googling it.  Everywhere you go, there is a computer attached or associated with it.   More and more companies are on-line. More and more entrepreneurs exist online.  More and more educational institutions are online.  More and more people from all over the world can communicate and work together at their convenience from anywhere, even home via online.  However, with all this dynamic change, there are still people who don’t own an I phone, I pad, or their own website.  Change is not easy for everyone. Where are you in all this change?  Are you on board the ship, are you swimming behind the boat trying to catch up to get on board?, are you floating on a boogie board watching the boat move from a distance or are you lying on the beach on unmoving ground watching the ship drift on by.  What are your thoughts?

  1. Great post, Jackie. As I mentioned the other night, we are personally conservative in how quickly we jump into a new technology...but if you're in business, you don't have that luxury. We have cell phones but they're not smart. Recently we got a GPS for the car and a laptop as a second computer. We have HD TV, but no cable/satellite or DVR. Our choices have a lot to do with avoiding the expenses of staying at the forefront of technology, but also because we don't want to be steeped in the values and worldview that sometimes come with some of the media choices. Welcome to the blog world! Cindy :)

  2. Technology is the way of the future for sure - if a person is not involved with it one way or another via a class or learning on their own - they will be left behind.

  3. Technology is advancing at amazing speeds now. It is only a matter of time until everything we do becomes technological. I wonder how many stores are going to be shut down within the next few years because of all the shopping that is being done online these days.

    1. I imagine some - those who are not part of the change. It will change. The companys will need more techie people who know how to use the internet to fulfill those orders. There are grocery stores that offer online shopping. My mother in law and her friends who live in a retirement community use it. Maybe that's why everytime I go grocery shopping by her home, it seems empty.

  4. I have seen the change in technology, when I go to the doctor's office they don't have folders to write your symptoms now they have computers that they type in your information. I do have a laptop but I'm not that interested in ipads or the next iphone.

  5. It is amazing how quickly technology is booming. Unfortunatly I'm the individual that is in the water swiming to catch up with that boat. as soon as I think that I made it, it speeds up a little more. maybe one day i will catch up.

  8. I agree, technology is changing very quickly and it is replacing jobs. I saw on the news that there is a new vending machine that makes pizza. So now people can go to a vending machine instead of a pizza parlor. It is true; more people can communicate and work together at their convenience from anywhere, even home via online. My cousin lives in Forney, Texas and we Skype all the time. Before Skype, we would just send letters or Facebook each other. Change is happening. Although I am not an expert in technology, I do feel like I am swimming behind the boat trying to catch up to get on board. I still have a lot to learn about technology but I am not new to it.

  9. Technology is something we must all keep up to date with, because it has become part of our lifestyle. It is amazing to see how things have changed, but we must also recognize how much of that change has been of convenience to us.

I agree that the new technology today is everywhere. You can't walk into one building without it having some type of new technology inside. I am not a person big on technology. I dont much care for computers either. I understand I should know my way around one though. If I dont keep up new technology I have less of a chance of finding work.

  11. Technology improves as time goes by and it is amazing how there is eletric cars. Everday technology has new information. I believe that sooner or later there will be touch screen T.V's.

    1. Yesterday we talked to a man who bought a car that was 100% battery operated. He'll never have to put gas again. It looked like a sport car. More and more cars are being manufactured with half battery and half gas - the hybrid. As we move into a gasoline crunch, more hybrids will be used/purchased. Like with anything, the first introduction of items will be expensive, but as the more and more companys make such items, the price will come down for them to be competitive.

  12. Advanced technology can be good in one way because it makes life/work a little bit easier. The bad thing is that the more it advances the more complicated it gets to handled.

  13. I don't see technology slowing down any time soon, every day I see something new that has to do with technology. It's increable on the things that we can achieve on by using technology and how we progress so fast through the years. I believe that I'm in the boogie board but slowing down and not moving with the current flow because I haven't updated on the new changes.

  14. I’m all for the new technology and I am up-to-date with it all. But there's only one problem about new technology, not a lot of people own new tech or can afford it. Pretty soon people that work in stores are going to be replaced with computers taking them out of the job just for one reason because it’s faster and smarter. Another thing is, how are we going to help the older generation adapt to this new technology? Yeah they might have an e-mail or Skype or maybe even a Facebook who knows. But how about when they get to a local grocery store and the cashiers are computers and no one is around to help them when it's not working or they don't know how to use it. How can we help those that don't have the new technology or that are not up to date with it all and prevent those from losing their jobs?

    1. Great questions. It is good for he current generation to keep abreast on the technology. As far as helping the older generation - that is where teaching and being patient comes in. It is you and I who can make a difference. I love your ideas because it makes me think. For example, I love my dad dearly, but he doesn't know how to withdraw money from an ATM. My mom does it, but what will happen to him if she passes before he does. To your point - more and more grocery stores have those self-serve check out registers. How can dad check out if he has to go to the store and that is the only thing that is available. Sure, they have a person to help, but what if she is not around or is busy helping someone else. Dad won't wait and will be impatient and just won't go. Here is where I, you, need to take our loved ones to show them in a patient loving way. How can they learn without a teacher - and a good one at that - that teacher can be anyone that is willing to teach. You don't need a credential for that!

  15. Technology is moving very quickly. Most devices now a days like, cell phones, computers, and atms are now touch screens. I fell like I am the person swimming behind the boat trying to catch up and get aboard because as soon as I get a new device and feel like Im caught up, a new device comes out and I am left behind again.

    1. A Tip - learn what is new, learn the change, but don't feel compelled to go buy a new device. For example, Apple just released a new IPAD. Go to the internet and watch some videos about the differences. Knowledge is key and good. Yes, I bet in 6 months a better IPAD version will be released. Again, learn it, know it, understand it, but you don't need to run out and buy it. This knowledge keeps you in the game because you 'know' the differences. Be wise - ensure you have what you need to accomplish tasks that will contribute to your success.

  16. Advanced technology has been a great way of communication, before I would speak to my relatives in Mexico once in a long while now we are in touch every other day via Facebook. I recently received an iPhone as a present and to be quite honest all I do is make outgoing calls, receive incoming calls, internet, calculator and text mesaging. I realize that I'm being left behind and I need to get on board with the new advances.

  17. Some people know more about technology than others and some may not know technology even exists. My opinion is technology advances quickly simply because the next person may understand it faster than others. They may simply add onto the technology or just update it in a way others may understand it. I personally think its easier for people to understand it when they stay up-to-date. Im constantly on board and catching up simply because at times the new technology is not affordable to me or im caught up with things in my life.

  18. Jackie, nice blog. I had planned what to write. I clicked on the link you sent me in the email on my I phone and went right to the blog. I decided I wanted to do it on my laptop so I could type faster than one finger. When I got on my laptop and clicked on the link, it looked totally different. I clicked on a few things trying to figure out how to reply, got frustrated and started to email you instead. Then I thought, there has to be a way to figure this out, so I went back on the link and clicked on a few more things and got to the reply. In the middle of it all, I wanted to quit altogether. I usually wake up, read the bible and this took time away from that. Although I think we have no choice but to be up on technology, I think we have to be really careful of the things it takes us away from, relationships, physical activity, housework, etc. That is why I don't do facebook, although I have a profile, online dating, etc. I'm surfing. I resist technology until I get caught up in a wave and have no choice but to ride with it. Keep it up for those of us who need you to tell us how to do things!

  19. Jackie, You are very right technology is moving very fast. Kinda scary! Especially with people losing jobs, I have a friend that works at Netflix and they just purchased a robot and laid of hundreds of people because of it...I think that it is cool and all but a lot of it I don't like I think that now day's technology has even replaced personal relationships. Yes, you can communicate via internet, but I am more of a personal person.. I would rather call you instead of text you, have a face to face conversation instead of email you know? I think technology is replacing that. Even working from home I can imagine the benefits from that but again, just my own opinion, I get more satisfaction in actually coming in to an office for eight hours and interacting with others! I have tried to keep up with technology but at the same time I even noticed it was taking away from personal family time with my kids and husband! I mean very cool stuff and helpful in MANY areas but people need to remember the importance of realationships too....

  20. I like the way you look at it Jackie. Technology's advancement is not something to fear. Technology is something that is definitely worth knowing, not only to keep up with the game, but also to enjoy and benefit from.

Although at times it's costly, technology can empower and bring about a euphoria that makes the price worthwhile.

Programs like Adobe’s Creative Suite enable average people with interests in web media or graphics to product professional grade movies or web sites.

Musicians or people who hold a feel for the art can use programs like Propellerhead’s Reason software. Reason enables the recording of instruments on the fly, creation of songs from raw sound patches (with or without a midi keyboard), and has been known to integrate with ProTools for the mastering of sound files.

Media providers like YouTube stream instructional videos
There’s plenty of online literature, apps, sites, and technological trinkets to help with daily needs.Integrations of grocery stores or even Pizza Hut enable easy at home shopping or preordering.

Cell phones like the iPhone, and laptops with increasing RAM and graphics capabilities are finite evidence that Technology is taking a long stride for advancement.

The most interesting thing is there’s more to come. Innovation. It definitely goes beyond a HTC or DROID basis.

  21. Great point of view Jackie, unfortunately I am not fully on board with technology. I do own a techy phone and at points I am intrigued by the whole advancements of technology and how it works. However, all the advancement of technology is frightening to me. Mostly because the more technology advances the more I feel like my rights and privacy are being invaded. I do try to put myself out in the technology world and try gadgets out but I just learn the basics and don’t dive deep into things. I do feel the same way as in how if we don’t hop on the ship and let it pass by us we are not going to be very resourceful in this world.

  22. Jackie, unfortunately I am swimming behind the boat trying to catch up to get on board. I hear and see a lot about technology changing. I am more of the type of person who isn’t picky with like getting the new iPhone or to other things that come out, but when I see technology changing it’s pretty scary and crazy. Makes me wonder what the future is going to look like. It’s pretty cool how some of this technology works. I think back and it’s a trip to see how technology used to be and how improved it got. Technology is important to keep updated with because it’s what’s in right now and if we don’t know a lot about technology were just missing out on the more advanced things that are coming out and we become clueless.

  23. Jackie, I can totally relate to your article. For me, technology is moving faster than I can ever catch up, and honestly, I don't think I need to be always on top of every new technology or gadget that comes out. Of course it would be a different story for someone who's working in the techie field. It is also amazing and a bit scary how you get used to the convenience of new technology once you start to use it. For example, I resisted shopping online before, but I realized that there's a lot more selections and is easier and faster to find what you want when shopping online, compared to actually going to the stores. Also, I love books, but once I got my kindle, probably 90% of my reading has been on the kindle. So technology is great, but I also wish it wouldn't move so fast!

  24. Jackie,

A couple of years ago many people didn't know where to look to find information online, now the most search engine people use is Google and Bing.

  25. Technology is moving at amazing speeds, it's so fast that many people can't keep up with because there is something new every day or month. I find it exciting but scary at the same time because we have created robots that are close to having feelings and to think on their own, with that it can be like a movie where they could take over the human race. So we got to slow it down and becareful what we create.

  26. I feel that I am up-to-date with technology. Even as technology advances I always see the connection from the piece it evolved from. Technology is moving really fast, and many unskilled jobs are being replaced by machines.

  27. As far as technology goes, I am swimming behind the boat trying to catch up. I know how to use the internet to search something or use the computer to type up a document, but if I want to be up to date with the world then this is definately not sufficient enough. The thought of all of this powerful technology is scary, so I just wanted to know enough to get by. For instance, I use an app on my phone to get directions, look up the bus route schedule, and even calculate estimated times of arrival. These days, I'm going to need to know how to do alot more than just look up directions. There is not one job I can think of that does not require the least of technological familiarity. It goes beyond checking emails and writing reports. And in order to do these simpilest of things it would require one to own a computer or a laptop. So what about those who cannot afford a computer or paying for the internet? That's just one of the worries that arises when trying to keep up with the speed of technology. I'm much more worried about staying up-to-date and having to learn new programs.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think I'm doing ok with this technology change. There are some things I'm not quite up-to-date but for the most part I think I'm on board. We all know that technology is just going to keep evolving and we must us all change with it.

  29. I think that with technology I am behind it, not to close or to far from catching up to it. I know that technology is a big part of our lifes but for some reason I still dont seem to be able to get on board completely. I know the basics of technology and what to do with it but i know that isn't enough. I try and try to get on but i just feel that their should be a limit to how far and how much technology one should have in their life. I've seen that people dont gather up any more to talk about whats going on in their life's. Now they just talk through phone or just message each other and thats their communication. And i just simply dont feel thats right. But I do have in mind that sooner or later technology will have to be in once life completely and it would be better if its sooner then later.

  30. This is absolutely true people are afraid of change but technology is indeed something nobody really wants to miss out. Like people are afraid of change by nature people are meant to be one way and that is comfortable, following others, trends,(unless your a leader) but my point to this I feel that technology is moving fast and people don't want to be left behind unless they rebel. An example would be me. I love the technology I got to admit it's just amazing experiencing using my iphone. (wow) why, well, because it's easy to use and i don't have to do much but, it stops that real socializing and getting to know people in person. Alot of things like going out for walks or hikes and enjoying nature is not as fun as watching a 3d movie. I do love technology but I wish not everything was soo technological. My fear would be that everything is soo technological even the trees. So not the deal for me. I love the world we live in and our natural part of it.

  32. Technology is changing and it changes more each and every day! This kind of change can be good for the people who do know how to use computers and all the other electrical kind of things. In a way it’s also not so good because not everyone has the education to use a computer or the time to learn how to use one. In my opinion there should always be something else besides advance equipment for the people who don’t know how to use it.

  33. I am not on board with technology at all. I really don't like things changing because I feel more safe with the things I do know. I have been refusing to buy an ipad and an iphone because I dont want to get attached to it and always rely on my phone. I still own a razor phone and I am happy with it. Sadly, I know i have to try this new technology to keep up with the world.

  34. I 100% agree that technology is moving fast. What is great about technology right now is that is creating various jobs for people. It helps a lot of people be successful. Unfortunately, there are some people who are not on board with technology. I feel that it is dangerous for those who are not on board with technology because they can be easily lost with the new tech. Technology can easily open doors for you nowadays. It is enjoyable to me to learn new things that are coming up and it is exciting. I wonder what my own kids one day will be enjoying.

  35. My thoughts are that it's kind of scary to see the change of technology and seeing the change in schools in my sons school there teaching them to use iPod for everything and when i was a child i didn't have that in my school that didn't even exist.

  36. In the pace of technology: Technology in regards to computer, pc decives, and phones I was a bit reluctant a couple of years ago. I saw the change with only one question, why? As I adapted to the devices I found it eye-opening. The big tug I had with the question why was actually just a war I had within of learning how to use something vs not knowing how to use it and watching everyone around be savy with the technology. Once I too learned I got to reap many benefits from increase personal growth-to saving time on homework from home. I agree that many companies now are starting from home with savy equipment and from there doors with money behind them start opening.

  37. Jackie I agree with you. As we can see its all about technology today. Its pretty scary realizing technology is moving so fast without some of us being aware of. I'm not so familiar with technology, but this class is getting me with the program. I found out that technology can bring success to our lives.

  40. I feel like an alien to technology. My little brothers have to help me sometimes to figure out computer programs or even doing things on a smart phone. I feel pressure to learn everything so quickly. I never had a computer of my own, but I am learning alot in OCA. Its teaching me that I need to learn as much as I can and keep learning about technology forever. I feel like i am barely getting on board.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Change is good, but change is hard. To this day I don't have a computer yet an iPod. New technology is growing so fast. My son has a tablet and knows how to do everything on it, yet I'm barely learning. Technology is great in my opinion.

  42. Now a days it's about technology. Some of us can't adapt to the new change and others can. I think technology has a bigger impact on children because I see them using IPad or the new IPhone, there more focus on technology than the school work or what not. In a way can also be bad with all this new technology.

  43. I am afraid that I am that person tirelessly swimming trying to catch up to get on board. Just when it appears like I am about to board the boat, it speeds up right before I am able to hop on. I have yet to own an ipod/ipad. I constantly find myself getting lost and confused trying to figure out how to use those devices. Don’t get me wrong I understand the basic functions of them, like how to take pictures, listen to music and play games, but when it comes to all those countless “apps” I am completely baffled. During the summer of 2012 I purchased my first apple product. It was the Mac book Pro, a laptop. What a challenge it was to adapt to a Mac when all my life I have owned a PC. Simply trying to master using the mouse pad was tedious. It is so sensitive and just that mouse pad has countless different functions. I probably have not mastered or even discovered all its functions, but for now I have learned to efficiently click, scroll, highlight, change screens, zoom in and out, all only using my mouse pad. However, I know I will continue to learn and grow as technology quickly advances, I might never catch up to that boat, but it is okay as long as I am not to far behind. I mean how many people can truly say they feel secure on that boat, not many if any? And if you do feel secure on that boat, don't get too comfortable, you will get left behind.

  47. Diana Martinez: Technology is moving up so fast and advanced. Next thing you will know we will be at home working, studying. And I think this will strongly affect us. The Internet will be used for so many things that we do now. We will be shopping for our groceries online. So many Iphones, Ipads, Upgraded laptops that are now being smarter than people.

  48. Alicia Ramon: I believe the technology is indeed moving fast. It has been proven that technology can change within a blink of an eye. Many don't seem to excited because they are just barely getting used the version that had just been released without even a year gone by. For example, cell phones, computers, t.v.'s etc. There are also others who are excited to learn something new that promises better and easier features. I understand both those concepts. So with all that said, I would like to imagine that I am on board the ship relaxing on the deck. However, I am on board not for the desire of the technology but to be desired because I can work with the technology new and old. For me it all comes to down to the workforce then for personal use.

  49. I agree that technology is moving to fast,i think that taking online classes is not a good idea because when you have a problem and the internet can't help you. What do you do? Who will you ask for help? It's better to be in a classroom with a teacher explaining you the subject that your taking. The other thing is that Elementary students have Ipads in their classrooms and use them doing work on a piece of paper. Next thing we know is that they are going to replace teachers with technology by everything being programmed and teaching us.
